Prime Small Screen Picks: 7 Must-Watch Motion Pictures This Week

Top Selection

This Satirical Thriller

Coralie Fargeat's daring satire tackles the demanding standards for women's appearance along with the perceived horrors of ageing. The veteran actress delivers a masterful acting turn in the role of Elisabeth, an aging film star demoted to hosting an aerobics show on television. Pushed out due to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out a secretive and gruesome procedure called "The Substance". This produces a new version of herself named Sue, culminating in an increasingly vampiric relationship between them. October 17th, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This classic whodunit thriller includes the talented actress playing Laura, an ace reporter who decides to take a hiatus from covering international wars to embark on an opulent ship with a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and donor, her partner, plus additional affluent individuals. Yet once a mysterious woman goes overboard one night and all passengers insists she wasn't real, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Available now, on Netflix

Presence

Soderbergh challenges his directorial skills through this clever supernatural story shot entirely from the perspective of the phantom. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the lens – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. Chloe seems conscious of the ghostly being, and the entity appears protective of her. But why? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, with a twist that could catch you off guard. October 11th, multiple showings, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom via this autobiographical spoof. He acts as an egotistical celebrity playing himself who takes on a lucrative offer to visit a festive event on the Spanish island for the wealthy superfan Javi. Contacted by the CIA to spy on the alleged criminal, the actor's unique performing skills comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

The director's claustrophobic thriller stands strong without requiring a continuation. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, a series of disappearances has left the youth anxious. Once Finney is taken by the villain and locked up in a dungeon, he dreads a terrible outcome. Yet the disconnected phone on the wall keeps ringing, with spooky callers giving advice, while the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen could save him. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, on Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the conflict between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for Mammon in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced televangelist and her criminal husband. Garfield acts as the venal Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. Both individuals set about monetising the people's religious faith. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, though Jessica Chastain succeeds to show the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, the Film4 channel

Black Bag

This period's another release by the same director delivers a espionage tale as tight similar to the collars used by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. He is tasked to discover a traitor among the team out of five possibilities – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of calm composure, leading to a delightful psychological game of fact versus fiction takes place. The supporting cast take part the clever spy entertainment. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
