Users Stopping Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying such medications need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
